Get Crafty
Hi! Jen here. School's out and summer is now in full swing where I am. One of the things I look forward to most this time of year is spending time with my kids. I love putting together craft projects-- anything that keeps them busy and encourages creativity. I thought I'd share one I did with my oldest today: a personalized pen and marker container to help us get Ellie's art supplies organized (gotta love projects with a purpose!). To make this project, you will need:
An empty container (we recyled an empty oatmeal cylinder)
Queen and Co self-adhesive foam letters
Q&Co Felt Frenzy flowers
Assorted Q & Co brads (large, small)
Queen and Co Self-Adhesive Rhinestones and Pearls
Cardstock--dark, medium, and light pink (by Core'dinations)
Scallop edge punch
A paper piercer (or crop-a-dile if you are using a metal tin)
Glue stick, glue dots and tape rubber band.
First, trim your container to size. I cut ours to 4". Don't worry if your edge isn't totally perfect. You'll be covering it up with cardstock later. Cut a 12" sheet of medium pink cardstock to height of container (4"). Cut another piece of light pink 12x12" cardstock
to 2 1/2" and punch one of the long edges with a scallop edge punch.
Adhere to container with glue stick. Tip: wrap a rubber band around container to keep it in place while it dries.
A 12" piece of cardstock was not long enough to wrap all the way around our container, leaving a small gap. Rather than stress about it, we taped the edges down and then covered it with a strip of dark pink cardstock, trimmed with the wavy edge of my rotary trimmer. Ellie added the self adhesive pearls down the center of the strip for a
decorative touch.
While the cardstock dries, gather your felt frenzy flowers and arrange them how you would like them to go around the top of your container.
Then, place around top edge using a brad or glue dot. When using a brad to adhere your flower, use a paper piercer to poke a hole through the container before inserting your brad (not something your child should do). If you are using a metal tin, a crop-a-dile would probably be preferred.
After your flowers are adhered, fill in the spaces between with self-adhesive rhinestones. Ellie chose her colors and created a "pattern" of dark pink, light pink, purple as she went around the top, but you can be a little more random, if you'd like :-)
Last, use self-adhesive foam letters to personalize your container, throw all those pens and markers that are scattered around the house inside, and enjoy!
